CHRONOLOGICAL FACTS

1975 |
|
The A Ma Baie Community Action League (AMBCAL), a group of concerned citizens, established a drop-in centre for young people in difficulty. |
|
|
|
|
1977 |
|
An emergency short-term shelter, known as Amcal, was incorporated as the West Island Youth Project. |
|
|
|
|
1980-1989
|
|
Amcal was given a contract by Youth Horizons, and became part of a system of centres for court-mandated youth. |

|
|
|
1990
|
|
Youth Horizons funding was removed (April), and Amcal closed for four months, to reorganize the program and secure funding. Amcal re-opened in September with financial support from the community and the Ministry of Health and Social Services. |

|
1991
|
|
Amcal offered a revamped program using the family preservation model, to better fulfill its mission as a community-based organization serving West Island families in difficulty. Funding came from varied sources. |

|
|
|
1995
|
|
A contract was signed by Amcal with Batshaw Youth and Family Centres for a Supervised Visitation Program (SVP) to provide supervision to parents of children in foster care. |
|
|
|
|
1999 |
|
West Island Community Shares (WICS) became a major source of funding for Amcal Family Services. |
|

2004
|
|
Amcal Family Centre (AFC) was opened, a storefront location at 330 Lakeshore Rd. in Pointe-Claire, to provide space for more Amcal group programs for children and adults.
Consistent with the agency's mission and values, in addtion to its unique Residential Program, Amcal also continued to provide Outreach Family Counselling, and work in liaison with local schools and CLSC's, to offer support for parents, as well as skill-building groups to help young people develop social competence and manage conflict more effectively. |

2006

In Cooperation with Les Services Intégrés and the CLSC Lac St-Louis, a young parents' program was developed, which became known as ''Our Place."
The Amcal Family Centre was closed, but Amcal continues to offer--at its location at 7 Ste. Anne in Pointe Claire Village--a variety of accessible and innovative programs to assist parents and young people build better relationships and cope with changing circumstances. |
